Sidecar motorcycles- the best way for sightseeing?
I've always been drawn to motorcycles. My grandfather had a motorcycle, that he may have loved more than my grandmother. My father always wanted one but never got one, which was often the subject of discussion at many family gatherings. My husband got himself a Fatboy Low and it was the one and only material thing he cherished. I even went as far as getting a motorcycle license, but it turns out I like to be driven around more than anything else. My feeling is that if you've never been on a motorcycle and especially a sidecar motorcycle, you don't know what you’re missing. Try it once and you’ll see for yourself.
Sidecars, in my opinion, are the purest form of transportation after walking and biking. The big benefit though is that it's so effortless and provides for pure gratification while riding. During our tour you’ll get immersed in the 360 degree perspective and that makes for a perfect ride. Private, easy riding, out in the open with fresh air, sun and no confinement. Motorcycles have been around for a really long time and so have sidecars. The first ever documented sidecar was invented in 1893 in France by an army officer. It was an illustration for a newspaper competition to find the best method of carrying a passenger on a bicycle. Soon after, the Brits came to play. They patented and started producing the first sidecar motorcycles even before WWI. During the war they were very popular on the war front and also as a means of transportation with the civilians, since they were a lot cheaper than cars. They had their heyday for decades, then they went away for a while and now they're making a huge comeback.
Sidecar sightseeing tours are popular now not only around Europe, US, Japan and Canada, they are emerging in the Caribbean too. Puerto Rico Sidecars is the first Caribbean company that's offering rides around San Juan and the vicinity, putting sidecar motorcycles on the map.
The history of our sidecars dates back around 80 years. It began in 1938 when the BMW R71 design was acquired by Russia and renamed the M-72. There are multiple theories as to how Russia acquired the designs. Most commonly it is known that the design was purchased from the Germans, while under the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. Another is that they bought the design from Sweden (a neutral country at the time) and reversed engineered the R71. This design is also known to be the inspiration and the initial road map for the IMZ-Ural sidecars made in modern times. There is actually an original BMW R71 that was purchased back in the late 1930’s, and is displayed in the IMZ-Ural factory museum.
The design of the M-72 was later sold to the PLA (People’s Liberation Army) of China in the 1950s-1960s. It was basically kept intact from the early BMW R71 models. Russia had sold a number of factories and designs to China during those years, as China had a demand for military equipment during the expansion of their army. Finally, around 1960 the CJ750 was introduced into the Chinese military. These machines have a long history and many of the details have been kept as sovereign secrets or lost, but the DNA and backbone of the construction stems all the way back to the 1930s BMW R71.
